Where the common numbers come from
| Number | Source | What counts |
|---|---|---|
| 33 for 3 months | Project 333, started by Courtney Carver in 2010 | Clothes, accessories, jewellery, outerwear and shoes; not underwear, sleepwear, lounge or workout clothes |
| 37 per season | A widely copied convention from the Un-fancy blog's seasonal capsules | Tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear and shoes; not accessories, underwear or workout clothes |
| 10 for 10 days | The 10x10 challenge | Ten pieces including shoes, worn for ten days |
| 25–40 | Most guides, including ours | A sensible range for a full season |
What decides your number
- Laundry: if you wash weekly, you need about a week of tops plus spares. Washing every few days lets you go smaller.
- Climate: four distinct seasons need more layers and shoes than a mild climate.
- Dress codes: a job with a uniform needs fewer pieces; separate office and weekend lives need more.
- Kids, pets, outdoor work: things get dirty. Allow more basics.
Three sizes to try
| Size | Pieces | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Lean | about 25 | Mild climate, casual life, frequent laundry |
| Standard | about 33 | Most people for one season |
| Roomy | about 40 | Cold winters, separate work and weekend wardrobes |
The capsule builder uses these three sizes and splits them across tops, bottoms, layers and shoes.
Decide what counts
Write your rules down before you start: most people exclude underwear, sleepwear, workout kit and special-occasion wear. Whatever you choose, stick to it for the season so the number means something.
Adjust after a season
Keep a simple tally of what you wore. Pieces with zero wears are candidates to go; categories you ran short of tell you where your number was too low.
